In May 2003 I was working as a waitress at a bar in Centreville, VA. I had a table of 7...just 1 short of being able to auto-charge the 15% gratuity. Well, as the night wore on, one of the guys at the table said, "You have to sing or we're not tipping you!" Well, I knew they had a fairly large tab going, so I simply replied, "Ok, but it's your eardrums!" I got up and sang Alicia Keys' Fallin. After I finished I had people come up to me and ask why I hadn't sung before, and just how great my song was...I was shocked! I always thought I had a horrible voice, and never would have imagined that I could be any good. Well, that was 5 years ago now, and I have been hooked ever since!

ahh! I remember it like it was yesterday. It was at a mexican restaurant near Staples Mill and Parham called El Chapala Restaurant. I was going there for dinner and karaoke started up in the back. I was really excited about it. I had never seen karaoke with the words on the screen. My first karaoke song was Celine Dion's "My Heart Will Go On", cheesy! and my second one was Jewel's "You Were Meant For Me", just as cheesy! and then they told me that I had to leave cause it turned into 21 and up at 9:00 and I was only 16 about to turn 17. So that night I decided that I wanted to do what the guy running it there did. So I got my first karaoke system at an early graduation gift and started running karaoke at piggy's attache when I was 17. And I've been doing karaoke ever since! The End! Well, no one would ever guess where I did my first karaoke song. I was in Malaysia. Back in '04, I went there to meet a friend for the first time. She was showing me around one day, and we happened upon a little bar that was open on two sides. We were practically the only customers. Seeing that I was a westerner, the manager played "Green Green Grass of Home" over the sound system. I started getting home sick! I noticed that karaoke was offered there, and I guess it was the mood of the moment, so I asked if I could go up on the stage and sing that song. So, I did! My friend, Lay Kian, even came up and helped me on the chorus. It was a real rush. After that, I was hooked.
Btw, Lay Kian and I remain friends to this day... by email. It's a bit of a hike for a date. :)
